About Us
We are quite proud of our herd, and invite you to make them a part of your life as well! Whether it be making a ranch visit, or creating your own project with their yarn and spinning fiber, know that you are truly supporting locals.
The Fiber
Each year in early summer we shear the herd. From there, the best fleeces continue on to be shown in various national competitions.
The rest will be skirted and sent off to the mill which can have up to a year turn around time on our products. Depending on the fineness of the animal’s fleece, we have yarn, spinning fiber, felting batts, rug yarn or dryer balls made from it.
Each year, an animal will produce only 2-5 lbs of usable fiber to contribute to products.
The finer the fibers, the thinner the yarns. Often we will blend silks, fine merino or plant based fibers to some of the yarns and roving.
As the animals age- and ours tend to live into their mid-20’s- their hair grows slower and gets less fine. To be made into yarn, the fiber length has to be at least 3 inches for the mill equipment. For shorter fibers, they can be hand spun in roving, felted from batts, or core spun into rug yarn. When it is no longer soft enough to be wearable is when it gets made into dryer balls.
